Press- Stop Telling me What Asian Girls Should Look Like

In recognition of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Refinery 29 highlights their series #NotYourTokenAsian where R29's Asian & Pacific Islander staffers take on the stereotypes that surround Asian American identity.

R29 photographer, Kaguya, shares her experience growing up surrounded by Asian discrimination and being compared to hurtful stereotypes. It wasn’t until she was a professional photographer working high fashion and editorial shoots where it started to really hit home the over photoshopping of her photography. It hit home because of her own experiences with stereotypes and body image. People had said to her "Why don't you look like other Korean girls [who are skinny]?" Since then she has made body bosititivty her career and describes herself as, “a thick Asian queen. I'm just doing my own thing.”

In the article Kaguya is wearing teh See ROSE Go Layering Vest. Read more about Kaguya and other experiences at Refinery 29, Stop Telling me What Asian Girls Should Look Like.
