Our Story, Our Promise

The French tuck is simply the art of tucking in a shirt at the very front while leaving the back loose and untucked at the sides. It's all about the drape here! According to France this simple tucking technique instantly adds polish to any look and helps add balance to a silhouette.

French tucking your shirt can add another dimension to your style. Such a simple, quick-fix, can make a polished difference. At See Rose Go we are drawn to this style trick for its ability to create a balanced silhouette AND comfort. Tucking in the entire waist can chop the body in half, but leaving it all untucked looks too casual. Half tucking is a middle ground.  There is the sophistication of a tucked-in shirt, but with none of the uptightness or discomfort of tucking in all the way.

If you’re new to the half tuck or French Tuck, here is a simple step by step.

You can French tuck with any top, but best used with T-shirts, blouses, button down shirts, and sweaters. This works with different thickness of tops too. You’ll find you can half tuck a sweater as easily as a blouse with your denim, skirt, pants, shorts and leggings!

Materials you'll need:

  • A shirt with a straight or slightly curved hem
  • A pair of pants or jeans or skirt
  • A full-length mirror.

Step 1: Choose your outfit

Select a shirt and pants combination that you'd like to wear. This look works well with casual outfits, such as t-shirts, button-down shirts, or blouses paired with jeans, trousers, or shorts.

Step 2: Put on your shirt

Put on your shirt and ensure it's clean and well-pressed if needed.

Step 3: Select the tucking side

Decide which side of your shirt you want to half tuck. You can choose either the left or right side, depending on your preference and the overall look you want to achieve.

Step 4: Unbutton or unzip

If your shirt has buttons or a zipper, partially unbutton or unzip the shirt. This will create a more relaxed and open look, which complements the half tuck.

Step 5: Adjust the shirt

Stand in front of a full-length mirror to see what you're doing. Hold both sides of your shirt and lift it slightly off the waistband of your pants. Adjust the shirt's length to create a pleasing drape on the side you've chosen to tuck in. Pull your top tight and flat at the hem with your hands.

Step 6: Tuck one side in

Carefully tuck the selected side of the shirt into your pants. You don't need to tuck it all the way in; the goal is to have a relaxed, asymmetric look. Tuck your shirt hem about one or two inches into your waistband, making sure the fabric is completely flat. Ensure that you leave a bit of the shirt untucked at the front to achieve the half-tuck effect.

Step 7: Adjust the tuck

Once the shirt is partially tucked in, use your hands to create a natural, slightly messy appearance. You can pull the fabric out slightly to make it look more effortless.

Step 8: Arrange the fabric

Adjust the tucked and untucked portions as needed to achieve the desired look. It's okay if it's not perfectly symmetrical; the charm of the half tuck is in its casual style.

Step 9: Style your look

Add a cardigan or jacket for the final layer. Your handbag, sunglasses and accessories will give your outfit a polished appearance.

Step 10: Final check

Before leaving, do one last check in the mirror to ensure that it doesn't appear too forced or rigid; it should maintain its relaxed and stylish vibe.

Now you're ready to rock your half-tucked shirt with confidence. This styling technique is versatile and can be adapted to various fashion preferences, so feel free to experiment and make it your own.

Ah yes, the hot debate. Women seem divided on the tuck in issue. Not only if to tuck in, but which bottoms are appropriate for tucking.  Recently to tuck or not with leggings spurred a lively office debate! So which team are you on? Team Tuck, or Team Not to Tuck? If you are in the middle, you’re not alone. The half tuck or “French Tuck,” has recently skyrocketed among Google searches since Queer Eye stylist, Tan France, use of the technique on the cult favorite Netflix show.
